Project Background

Prediction on Future Sludge Production

Upon commissioning of the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS) Stage 2A and expansion/upgrading of some existing Sewage Treatment Works (STW), including Pillar Point STW and San Wai STW, the total amount of sludge in Hong Kong requiring disposal would be substantially increased from some 900 tonnes per day (tpd) at present to about 1,300 tpd in 2015 and subsequently to over 2,000 tpd in 2030.

Urgent Need for an Alternative Sludge Disposal Method

Existing landfill would only last until early to mid 2010 decade. In addition, due to high water content, sludge has to be co-disposed with municipal solid waste (MSW) and construction waste in a ratio of about 1:10. The current disposal ratio of 1:10 cannot be maintained because of the increase of sludge due to the commissioning of the HATS Stage 2A and expansion/upgrading of some existing sewage treatment works.

There is an urgent need for an Alternative Sludge Disposal Means!!
